Testimonials and Reviews

"GUITAR PLAYING FOR SONGWRITERS is a necessary tool for any songwriter who wants to elevate his craft. If you want to improve the chords, rhythms and melodies to your songs... and if you want to become a better player... buy this video! I sat down with Gary and watched his presentation and can truly testify that this is one of the best tools available for songwriters who want to improve. In fact, I bought one for myself."
Bart Herbison, President, Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI)

"All songwriters who play guitar need this tape. I've never seen so much useful information in one place. It's a MUST HAVE !"
Jimmy Scott, writer of Bonnie Raitt's "Love Sneakin' Up On You".

"One of Nashville's most solid professional guitarists for years, Gary Talley is also a skilled and accomplished songwriter. Who better to unlock that mysterious "next level" for writers? His video cuts a clear, uncluttered path for anyone seeking a broader vocabulary. Not every writer aspires to be a "hot" guitarist; for those who see the instrument mainly as a writing tool, this tape is a must. I also recommend it for beginning/intermediate players who DO want to burn someday; this is just the kind of foundation you'll need."
Rusty Russell, Nashville Editor, Guitar Player Magazine.

"Gary is a teacher par excellence. For those who are not fortunate enough to take private lessons from Gary, this video is the next best thing. You get the best of Gary's
teaching in your own home, to learn at your own speed."
Rory Bourke, Hall of Fame songwriter.

"This is the best instructional video for the intermediate guitarist I've seen. Gary covers the basis for the Nashville number system as well as proper strumming techniques. Also included are: finger picking, percussive playing, and passing chords. He includes tips on the most common mistakes that songwriters make when they structure their song. If you can already play chords, but need to add that extra lift to your playing then this video and accompanying chart book is a must. It might be the best investment you could make early on."
Galen Breen, Musician, engineer, producer and owner and " Gran Fromage" (big cheese) at The Gator Hole.

"This video is bound to be illuminating to songwriters."
Jerry Kimbrough, Nashville session guitarist.

"Gary showed me how to get guitar techniques past my brain and into my "muscle memory". He taught me exactly what I WANTED TO LEARN instead of following a predetermined agenda."
Jana Stanfield, songwriter and author of A Musician's Guide to Making and Selling CD's and Cassettes.

"Gary is a superb teacher."
Sherrié Austin, Arista Recording Artist

"I learned a lot from this video, and I've been playing guitar for 30 years!"
Darrell Anderson, Washington Grove, MD.

"Your article, "Chords for Songwriters" (Acoustic Guitar, Dec.'97) did more for my understanding of how to apply what I've taught myself than any single thing I've come across in 3 years. Thanks to Mr. Talley for finally making it all make sense to me."
Mark A. Peterson, Houston, TX

" I loved your video! All of the stuff about the color chords and connector chords really helped a lot. The best part was the information about capo placements."
Jim Huffman, Barryton, MI.

"Just a note to personally thank you for your article "expanding your chord vocabulary" as found on the Acousticguitar.com  site. I found it simple and sensible, even for a third year player, like me. Great tips and a lot of practical, easy to implement, info. Thanks Again."
Barry

"Gary, I enjoyed your workshop for Princeton songwriters and enjoyed your video as well. If I get to Nashville it would be great to take a private lesson at a later date. Your comments about learning guitar were right on."
Denise Sullivan

"Gary, Tin Pan South and the coordinators meeting were awesome!!! NSAI sure does an excellent job of building community between all the writers. Towards the end of TPS I noticed that your guitar video was back in the store. I think they had originally sold out of them. I snatched one up and have already viewed it through. THANKS! (My wife was impressed that I could do that 'SWEET HOME ALABAMA' part!) Thanks again for the great video!"
Bill Porta, Billings, MT

"Gary, I sincerely enjoyed getting to meet you in person and also to see you perform at several of the Tin Pan South events. I have played guitar for 35 years, 25 of those at a professional level in local and regional bands, and your Video and Book GUITAR PLAYING FOR SONGWRITERS is very useful to me. Especially the charts for the Color Chords and Connector Chords that are often used between chord changes. I feel the product is a bargain at twice the price, and appreciate you sharing your gifts of playing and writing with those of us who are trying to acquire the skills of songwriting. You have a great product that is reasonably priced, and I was very impressed with the quality of the video and the book that is with it. The lessons are well constructed and easy to follow and I'm even learning some finger picking techniques."
Chuck Pinney, Dayton, OH

"Gary:
We met at NSAI's Music Row 2001 Symposium, this month. Thanks for taking the time to talk with me. I was a little tongue-tied when we spoke but I remember trying to tell you how reluctant I was to tell anybody about your video. Sure, I loved it. Sure, I learned more from the first viewing than in years of trying to teach myself. Sure, it opened up options for me to perform better and write better. IMMEDIATELY. In fact, I believe it's the single best thing I've done to improve my songwriting to date. My advice to songwriters who want to write better and accompany themselves: AVOID BUYING THIS VIDEO AT YOUR OWN RISK! Please feel free to post this on your web site, which is awesome, by the way"
Sincerely,
Ken Sinclair, NSAI member, Lake of the Ozarks, MO

"Gary, I just wanted to take a minute to say thanks for such an outstanding video. I have learned more in the past couple of days with your help than in the past couple of years on my own. I'm looking forward to adding this knowledge to my songwriting skills. I already see improvements."
Joey Jackson, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

"I saw you playing guitar on my local TV station. After hearing the way you played those tunes, I couldn't wait to order your tape. I've been playing for 10 years, but never took formal lessons. Thanks for giving me even a shred of hope that maybe someday I can play half as well as you."
B. Daniel, New Brunswick, NJ

"Gary Talley, of The Box Tops, has an awesome guitar video that will make you a better guitar player and songwriter FAST!"
The Guitar Zone - www.theguitarzone.com

"Gary is a fine musician, and is extremely experienced at both songwriting and backing up songwriters who may not be strong guitarists. This combination made him perfect to put this video together.
Many songwriters may not spend time practicing, enlarging their chord vocabulary, learning good rhythm technique or finger picking, etc. Their songwriting can become completely constrained by, or even defined by their limited knowledge of the instrument.
One can learn a lot from this video. In lesson 1, you learn about the number system, color chords, relative minors. A good workbook is provided, and a little rewinding will clarify anything that might get by you the first time.
In lesson 2, we find connector chords, suspended 4ths, diminished chords, etc. In lesson 3, Gary concentrates more on the strumming/picking hand showing several rhythm patterns, grooves, etc. as well as finger picking patterns.
It is a very informative, helpful and affordable way to become a better guitarist, and we highly recommend it."
